The ETH tree-ring laboratory was established in 2006
and is part of the Chair of Forest Ecology at ETH Zurich, which is headed by Prof. Dr. Harald Bugmann. The
laboratory is directed by Dr. Christof Bigler and supervised by Veronique Ringwald.
Our research focuses on dendroecological
studies, i.e., we use tree rings to study forest dynamics such as
regeneration, growth and mortality processes, and we investigate the
effects of climate and natural disturbances on trees, forests and
landscapes. Our goal is to improve the understanding of ecological
processes, particularly in mountain forests, and to use tree rings to develop, improve and validate
empirical and process-based models of trees and forest ecosystems. The laboratory is equipped with 2 LINTAB tree-ring measuring systems, 4 Leica stereomicroscopes and cold light sources, 1 Leica digital camera, computers with TSAP-Win software, Suunto increment borers, 1 core microtome and 1 Hegner belt sander in a separate sanding room. |
